Why a patient paid a $285 copay for a $40 drug

Recently, a patient who was insured thru Anthem Insurance Company had a “mini stroke” while on vacation. When she returned home she was prescribed telmisartan, a generic drug, for her blood pressure. She ordered a 90 day supply at a cost of $285. It seemed high to her but she paid it because she thought it was serious and she should have it.

Shortly thereafter she needed to go away again  but wanted to make sure she had enough meds for her trip. But, because it was within the 90 day window of her last prescription, the prescription was refused by the insurance carrier.

During a trip to her local COSTCO, she asked them how much the prescription would cost if she paid cash. The $285 prescription would only cost her $40 if she paid cash with COSTCO.
